(steve) bart officials saytheir watching you.(pam) all trains are now equipped with surveillance cameras. kron4's hermela aregawi spoke with a former police chiefand passengers about whether the new cameras are enough..to deter crime. (pkg) four cameras now on every train car.bart hopes it will help ease passenger concerns about safety on trains.former bart police chief gary gee weighed in on the new security measures.gary gee/former bart police chief:if a camera has been installed in each of them and they're not only operational but can record and store images for extended period of times so it can be retrieved by police as evidence then yes bart has met
his promise.a promise bart vowed to keep after a passenger was shot and killed on a train back in january 2016.the suspect here.. was caught on some cameras - but turns out the ones on the trains were decoys.passengers we talked to applaud bart's effort to keep people safebut they don't think it will put an end to crime.ashley haynes/bart rider: i'm not really sure because at the same time people are not going to be aware. people aren't really not going to care about the cameras so things are still going to go down regardless. i'm very cautious. i'm always on my p's and q's because you never know what can go down. you never know who's going to walk on their because anybody gets on. demario henderson/bart rider: i'm making sure i'm very alert on bart because you never know what might go down. you might have a scuffle, you might get robbed. it's harsh in the bay area but you got to be aware of your surroundings and you've got to know what's
going on.others think there should be more cops on trains..to keep criminals away. but former chief gee says there aren't enough bart police officers to man each train, each day.gary gee/former bart police chiefto put police officers on each of those cars number one would be cost prohibitive. so bart police resort to the traditional form of policing and that is have officers assigned to sectors or beats that are responsible for 2/3 stations(hermela aregawi)like those passengers were saying.. former bart gary gee says the best thing passengers can do to keep themselves aware of their surrounds.in san francisco, hermela aregawi, kron 4 news.
